You should wash with cold water and use sulfate free shampoo. The result was red fading into black. You can skip the bleaching if you want to but the color with not be as vibrant. You can use a few temporary dyes until you grow the black out and then you can have your natural color back.

My stylist at the time came up with putting darker brown and red highlights woven through my (three inch) roots to help blend the color of my hair and the black and break up/blur that unholy line of color change.
